Ourika valley day trip

The Ourika valley is the closest mountain escape from Marrakech: an hour’s drive, a river valley at around 1 500 m, and a walk up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. About eight hours in total, from €19 per person.

The day

  • A stop at a traditional Berber house for mint tea
  • The valley road along the Ourika river
  • Setti Fatma and the walk to the first waterfall — about 40 minutes over rock
  • Lunch by the river, at your own cost

What to bring

Shoes you can scramble in: the path to the waterfalls crosses the river on stones and is genuinely uneven. In spring the water is high and the walk is more of a scramble than a stroll.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ourika waterfall walk difficult?

It is a 40-minute scramble over rocks with a few river crossings. Most people manage it, but not in sandals, and not with a pushchair.

Can you swim in the Ourika?

In the natural pools, in summer, yes — the water is cold and the pools are shallow. It is a paddle rather than a swim.
