Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate in a day

The fortified earthen ksar of Aït Benhaddou above the riverbed

This is the longest of the day trips from Marrakech — about eleven hours — and the only one that crosses the High Atlas. You see the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2 260 m, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou, and the film studios at Ouarzazate. From €30 per person.

What you see

  • The Tizi n’Tichka pass, with stops for the view over the Atlas
  • Aït Benhaddou: a fortified earthen village used in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and dozens more
  • Ouarzazate and the Atlas Film Studios
  • The Ounila valley on the way, if traffic allows

Be realistic about the day

It is eleven hours with roughly seven of them driving. The scenery is the reason to do it, but if long road days do not suit you, the Ourika valley gives you mountains in eight hours instead.
